The day started just like any other… catching a midnight bus from Pohang across Korea with my friends to the sprawling metropolis of Seoul, then spending a few hours avoiding sleep and watching a cookie-cutter action flick in a multi-room before finally going to the USO office to begin our tour of the DMZ. See? Normal, boring Saturday.
Okay, so maybe not the normal. Aside from getting absolutely no sleep whatsoever on Friday, visiting the DMZ was a pretty unique experience. My friend Pete was a champ and handled all the logistics for the tour, so all we had to do was make it to the USO office on time. Once there, we packed onto a bus with a host of other tourists and set off towards the first stop of the tour: the Third Tunnel which was, as our tour guide so bluntly put it, ‘nothing special’. (Try starting a tour off like that in the USA without getting fired).
