The Passport Index recently ranked the US Passport at Power Rank 5, along with Canada, Malaysia, Switzerland, and Ireland. This gives Americans plenty of options for visa-free travel, but most of those destinations allow Americans to stay for 30-90 days before requiring a visa of some sort. There are, however, a few countries which offer longer periods of stay, and I’ve gone to the trouble of rounding them up for you 😉 Here are the best visa-free countries for Americans to visit!
A few things to bear in mind:
I have omitted some countries — all of them Caribbean or South Pacific island nations — in order to get this list down to 10. I’ve left in Fiji and the Bahamas, to get you that tropical flavor — just bear in mind there are a couple other comparable choices!
Finally, I’ve included the Nomad List figures for each country’s capital city in the following areas: Cost of a Meal (dinner), Cost of a Coffee, Average Monthly Rent, and Internet Speed. Some of these values have been rounded up or down. For more information on each country, I highly recommend checking out the Nomad List, as they do a fantastic job of rounding up all the data you could possibly need when considering which destination to choose as your next base.

Check out the Mamanuca Islands for some world-class snorkeling, or, if you’re in the mood for some off-the-beaten-path fare, head over to Feathery Travels for tips on visiting the tiny paradise of Caqalai.

A north African nation bordering Libya, Tunisia is a place steeped in history — home to the Berbers and, later, the Carthaginians. Now, it contains a wealth of ruins for tourists to discover, as well as swaths of the Sahara and stretches of Mediterranean beaches. And that’s not even getting started on Tunisian food… If all of that sounds like your cup of tea, you’re in luck! Americans get 120 days of visa-free travel in Tunisia.

A tiny country in the Caucasus region between Europe and Asia, Armenia is the hub of the Armenian Orthodox branch of Christianity and a great spot for those interested in architecture and history. It has a wealth of natural beauty as well, with mountains exceeding 4,000 meters in height and the massive Lake Sevan near the border with Azerbaijan. Its unique location and low cost of living make this a great destination to linger for a while, and Americans get 180 days visa-free in the country!

Canada has an area just about equal to that of the United States, but only a tenth of the population. This means more wilderness than you can shake a stick at, and a host of natural wonders to go with it. For the winter sports buffs, there are few better places to be. There’s a reason the 2010 Winter Olympics were hosted in Vancouver and the nearby ski resorts of Whistler and Blackcomb. Travel here is extremely easy for Americans, who are able to stay up to 180 days visa-free!

Mexico

Mexico is much more than the resort towns of Cancun and Puerto Vallarta. It was the home of both the Aztec and Mayan civilizations and houses a number of pyramids and other ruins, most notably Chichen Itza. It is also the home of world-famous cuisines and artistic styles — I mean, where would we be without mariachis and tamales? And sure, there are beaches as well. Another easy-to-access option, Mexico allows stays of up to 180 days for US citizens.

I know, I know. That $2,000 USD per month figure is insane. Remember, that number is only for London. There are plenty of other nice places in the UK to put your feet up and spend 180 visa-free days. Try a corner of the Scottish Highlands or the gothic wonderland of Edinburgh. Or check out one of the academic hubs of Oxford or Cambridge. The UK being composed of four distinct countries gives travelers a great deal of flexibility to ‘choose their own adventure’ when they visit– what will yours be?

Machu Picchu. Does anything else need to be said? Fine. Alpacas. Colorful wool clothes. Incan civilization. Giant freakin’ condors. If you need any other reasons to visit this South American country, then you have no soul. And, with a cheeky 183 days, it’s ranked 3rd on our list (and 4th overall) for countries giving Americans the longest amount of visa-free sanctuary.
Bahamas

I first heard about the Bahamas from the Beach Boys… at least I’m pretty sure I did. An island nation just off the coast of Florida, the Bahamas offer a wealth of leisure and adventure activities for holiday-seekers. Fun fact: the islands are home to Dean’s Blue Hole, a saltwater blue hole sinking over 200 meters into the ocean depths. Free-diving, anyone? Americans can stay in this tropical paradise for up to 240 days.
Georgia

- Cost of a Meal: ~ $8.00 USD
- Cost of a Coffee: ~ $1.50 USD
- Average Monthly Rent: ~ $250 USD
- Internet Speed: 10 MBps
- Visa-free Stay: 365 days
Last, but not least, is my current home of Georgia, or Sakartvelo as the locals call it. With a generous visa exemption for an entire year, Georgia shares top honors with Palau, which I cut from this list. Bordering Armenia, Azerbaijan, Turkey, and Russia, Georgia has an ancient history and is regarded by many as the birthplace of viniculture. With delectable cuisine, some truly breathtaking scenery, and extremely welcoming people, Sakartvelo is one of the most attractive options for Americans looking to live outside of the US for an extended period of time.
